Basalt Map
Within the Big Sky partnership region, there are several major geological formations with high potential for geologic sequestration. One of these is the basalt layer of the Columbia Plateau Volcanic Province that is the dominant geological feature in much of Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. The CO2 storage potential of the Columbia River Basalt Group (CRBG) within this volcanic province has been estimated at between 50 to 100 GtCO2, making it one of the most significant potential deep geological storage formations in the region. Similar immense basalt flows occur around the world and are recognized as playing an important role in the global carbon cycle. To learn more about our basalt injection pilot test, click here.
